In our case, people fighting for them periodically, both politically and militarily.

Rights come from humans who realize that other humans are humans, too.

There are too, too, too many people who don't see others as people.

By 'positive', do you mean kind of like inherent?

Don't know...a part of me, thanks to my cultural studies/anthro work, says that they're human constructs...but a good-sized chunk of me still insists that just because they're constructs doesn't mean they aren't getting at something real and important...remember the conversation you, me and Silver had last semester, about being able to get closer and closer to what is objectively good? I'm not 100% sure I believe in objective good, but I know some things sure feel that way...a part of me believes against all my trainnig and reason that there are such things as inalienable, if you like God-given, rights. But I don't know.

I was reading yesterday about how (I think it's Iran, but I'm not 100% sure) was arguing that rights are culturally subjective at some UN meeting where they passed some human rights resolution that does almost nothing in practice. It was kind of strange to hear about a theocracy (which they were at the time) pushing relativism.
