[books] Caveman Chemistry

When I come across a book that I think would appeal to four of my friends, all of whom have different interests and insights, I think it's worth posting about.

(cjpetherick, ericrowe, princeofcairo, and whswhs, I'm looking at you.)

The book I'm talking about is Caveman Chemistry: 28 Projects, from the Creation of Fire to the Production of Plastics, by Kevin M. Dunn ( Read more... )

mental health, reference, underkoffler's overviews, books, mad science

As a consequence of my background in archaeology and anthropology, I've done some of that for real (I've got an hand axe I made myself from Sonoma county obsidian somewhere, have cooked acorn meal with fire-heated rocks, made cord from dried reeds, etc.) and I've got a solid grasp of theory in much of the rest. My experiences lead me to believe that, should I be flung into another dimension where I must live by my wits or perish, I may as well just lie down so the wolves don't needlessly tire themselves out chasing me; it'll annoy the wolves and make my feet hurt. Like math, life without modern technology is hard!

I worry not so much about problems with the space-time continuum, but more about surviving world war three...I take great comfort in the fact that so many of my friends and family are scary smart with a love and fascination of all things pre-industrial.

I suppose, if anyone is going to be sucked into a dimensional anomaly, it's gonna be you.

Please add me to the list of your friends who is also likely to enjoy a book like this. Wow. Thank you, she says, anxiously awaiting her next Border's coupon....
