A whenever, wherever theme because I'm sad and I've had a few songs on my computer I'd want to throw at people. Totally Buffy-mun's fault and spread the love, since apparently there's forty odd people who agree with me in thinking their interaction is always entertaining.
“Do you worry that you're not liked
How long till you break
You're happy cause you smile
But how much can you fake
An ordinary boy an ordinary name
But ordinary's just not good enough today”

Superman’s Dead, by Our Lady Peace
Kon backstory with gratuitous name dropping! He’s the immature spliced genetics of Superman and a human (recently revealed to be Lex Luthor as his other daddy, but that makes Kon cry and go evil, shhh). This occurred because, gee, Superman died in a fight with Doomsday. So Superboy was created to be this replacement they could control and that didn’t go so well. Kon’s major angst buttons are that he’s stuck at age sixteen forever, can’t get a real date, and his idea of normalcy is only considered really normal when he’s next to Impulse. Beyond that he’s a sweet and cute dork.

Theme from the Angel Series, by Rob Kral
I avoided using the Buffy theme song by using…yeah, Angel’s. Cuz I’m sneaky like that and I don’t have the soundtrack. Dark, eerie, vampire slayer-esque. The chosen one picked to fight all evil is Buffy Summers in a nutshell. So far she’s taken on from the Master to the Mayor and looked good doing it. Even in pink hot pants, but we still love her ‘cause her snark brings all the boys to the yard.
“I try to shut eyes, but I can't get her outta my sight.
I know I'm gonna know her, but I gotta get over my fright.
We'll, I'm just gonna walk up to her.
I'm gonna talk to her tonight.”
-
Somebody’s Baby, by Phantom Planet
Phantom Planet’s cover of Jackson Browne’s hit, because Kon’s idea of courtship is painfully impaired. And he’d probably be singing it only because his coolness implants only lasted to “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” instead of “Not Another Teen Movie.” It’s peppy, upbeat, unbelievably hilarious over how hopeful this person is to simply talk to the object of their affections and, well, very Kon.
“How can I fight
When we're on the same side
How can I fight beside you
So keep on calling me names, keep on, keep on
And I'll keep kicking the crap till it's gone”
-
The Way Things Are, by Fiona Apple
Buffy needs one ass kicking song, so there you go. Kon flirts with her, she gently turns him down because she has rebound issues and angst and then Kon just keeps being silly and totally wearing her down so she comes around to thinking that she’d like to date him. Somewhere later on she becomes whipped, but this is not the song for that. This is the song to show she can be badass and how she’s set in being zen about how fucked up her life is, and how for a little while she was completely aloof.
“They’re giving up to hurt you
With things they say
So you put on your armor and stand in the way
You wear in the target
That took so long to earn
And you start looking sideways
It’ll return”
-
Flower Man, by Tonic
I admit this one’s kinda weak because there’s no way I’m searching deeply for a romance song the best fit a superhero giving birth to a tentacle baby and thus making him seem date-worthy to Buffy. Because…what the hell camp canon. So, yeah, since Kon’s part Kryptonian and they live off sunlight like a flower and there’s more sexual birds and bees talk in there but I’ll just let you enjoy the song.
“But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break”
-
And So It Goes, by Billy Joel
Annnnnnnnnd Buffy gives in. Kon doesn’t immediately reciprocate because he’s silly like that, but they start out. Not expecting much because they’re both still rebounding from season/issue spanning loves. Lo and behold, they find out they’re kind of good for each other. Even if it’s not forever and ever, it’s healthy and wow is that rare at CFUD.
“Here I am and I want to take a hit
Of your scent cause it bit so deep into my soul
I want you
Yeah, you do you do...
You make me want you
Oh you do you do...
Send me all your vampires
I want you
And I can't get enough, oh I can't get enough”
-
I Want You, by Third Eye Blind
Gratuitously abused BtVS song! But really, there are other reasons. Like I ran out of sap choices, and it has vampires! And they’re really just low key no purple prose here kind of couple. They want each other, and thusly make out like woah. I needed something to juxtapose the softness and sincerity of the last song with the fact that they’re both sarcastic and shallow given the right moments.
“When the night just cuts you through
And the dream is lost to you
When you're worried and confused
I will give you my heart give you my shoulder
I give you my heart
Give you my shoulder
Over and over”
-
Heart and Shoulder, by Heather Nova
Ah, the heart of the relationship. Comfort. Buffy’s first reaction to Kon’s woes is hugging…and making out, but work with me here. Kon’s first impulse is to be all touchy-feely boyfriend. So Buffy returns the gesture by being super comforting and hug-offering when it comes to Kon (and Bart by proxy, woot!) Sometimes they can’t make the problems go away or get better, but they don’t mind it as much when they’re full of PDA.
“I see your face in every punch I take
And every bone I break, it’s all for you
And my worst pains are the words I cannot say
Still I will always fight on for you.”

Gifts and Curses, by Yellowcard (uploaded November 5)
The Kon to Buffy song. Because Buffy deserves this song waaaaaaay more than movie!Mary Jane, and Kon is the type of guy who’s main show of affection falls into the categories of: making a fool of himself out of smitten joy, or doing the “big dumb hero” act and this falls squarely in the latter category. And the instrumental bridge is pretty and treading lightly on the “wow, sappy” line to “here Superboy comes to save the day” and the crowd goes wild.
“I never wanted to be what they even wanted me to be
And now this story ends untainted
Without me
Superhero won't you come and take me away
Superhero won't you come and fly me away”
-
Superhero, by Vanessa Carlton
Buffy to Kon song. Kon’s all fiddles and happy beats, when Buffy’s quiet and pianos. A lot more wistful, and almost trying not to admit they’re hoping. Yeah, it treads a little into the “damsel in distress” spiel, which Buffy isn’t, but goddamn there’s nothing more romantic than being carried off in someone’s arms into the sky and Buffy indulges in that girlish dream!
“Ten minutes ago, I met you
And we murmured our how do you dos
I wanted to ring out the bells
And fling out my arms
And sing out the news”
-
Ten Minutes Ago, Cinderella musical
This is completely the Kon/Buffy one month anniversary song where he flies her up into the sky and makes a castle out of the clouds for her. It was so sappy only the sappiest of love musicals could properly convey this sentiment, also because two different people thought of it when it was going on and Buffy-player will most likely never live it down. Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaap.
((The mp3 version is only half the song. Different full versions can be found in the
m4a format,
rm format or the full mp3 the weekend. It’s just that perfect. If posting different formats alongside the mp3 is bad I'll take it down))
“Your eyes were covered in sunglasses
When they first met mine
I sat there and stared at you
You didn't seem to mind
The awkward ways we meet
First comes heavy breathing
Staring at the ceiling
What will happen next
I don't wanna know”
-
I Don’t Wanna Know, by New Found Glory
As woobie-inducing as they are in camp, Buffy and Kon seem to operate on the idea that things probably won’t turn out well, even if they’re good for each other now. Kon’s going to grow up to be Superman (if Infinite Crisis doesn’t kill him). Buffy’s convinced she’ll die from slayer duties. That doesn’t stop them from enjoying the moment and certain blinking and “you put your foot in your mouth again” moments. And if any of the couples manage to get together outside of camp you know heavy breathing’s going to be involved in their reunion, right? Right.
“Don't turn your back on me
Conceal and protect me
I need you to stop me
From reeling around
The time's gonna come
When you no longer need me”
-
Fly to Me, by Keane
Totally Buffy-mun’s fault for this song. Because I don’t have anything that sappy in my collection and she does. It’s the end song, getting out and looking back fondly. And the whole flying metaphor? Totally literal here. Because we have to end this out on a sappy, heartfelt note damn it.
