Can anyone recommend any books about Vikings? Any genre is fine. I found one or two on Amazon a couple months ago, but they were terrible and I'm not willing to waste any more money if I don't have to.

Specifically the late 900's or early 1000's if you need a time period.

Thanks!

Fiction or reference?

Either, though I've read a bunch of reference books already. More reference is always good if that's what you had in mind.

HI!

I have a friend who re-enacts viking in the SCA, so I could ask her for some titles, but they'd all be reference and likely kind of obscure. Shall I ask her for some suggestions?

HI! :D

Certainly! I read a bunch of reference stuff over the summer and it's always good to read more now that it's been awhile.

Thanks!

Have you tried the Laxdaela sage? It's an Icelandic saga from the 1200s. It's available to read online at http://omacl.org/Laxdaela/ if you want to get a taste before deciding if you want to buy it.

Is this for the super secret project or something to kill time with?

LOL.
My Viking story, yep. I still haven't started it. Well, I wrote about 10 pages this summer, but I want to get moving on it.

You've read The Long Ships by Bengtsson? It's the one that came immediately to mind.

Seconded! It's a wonderful book. I didn't think that anyone but me was likely to have read it. Awesome!

I would also add: there's a book out there on the Leif Eriksson voyages, a historical novel, and it's really well-written but depressing, and I can't for the life of me remember its title or author. It wasn't "Summerland" but it was something like that. The author was a British writer who is otherwise known for writing funny fantasy, sort of sub-Pratchett quality. I'll see if I can scout it out for you. Just the other month, I gave this book to the used bookstore, expecting that I'd never read it again. If I still had it, you could just plain have my copy...
