Castle: two observations

Oct 08, 2009 13:43

Upon finishing first season, I have two observations:

1. Rick Castle is quite possibly the most adorable TV dad ever.

2. Someone on the writing staff has serious mommy issues.

Okay, I lied:

3. Everyone who said I would love this show was right. New tag!

There is that ;). But, see, it supports the theory that Martha is a McGill!

He manages to be both fun and supportive. Best scenes in the show.

OMG, that LINE! If I hadn't loved him before, that cemented it.

Castle's daughter is also the nicest, prettiest daughter ever.

Yeah. I'm not much of a mystery/procedural fan, but I would watch a WAY worse show than this to see Nathan Fillion be rakishly charming every week, and the father/daughter scenes are especially adorable.

The thing I'd forgotten over the summer and am remembering now with S2 is how much I enjoy the secondary characters. Lanie Parish is awesome, and Esposito and Ryan crack me up.

I think what I like is that Castle is billed as the kind of character who would irritate the crap out of me (the grown man who refuses to be an actual adult), and yet he's not. He's a guy who has enough money to enjoy his life, but for the things that really matter (particularly fatherhood), he's actually responsible and mature.

You're so right -- they do *bill* him that way, but Castle isn't actually refusing to be an adult. He's just very smart, and he has a short attention span, and he's used to getting what he wants, and he has enough money to indulge his whims. But as you say, he's fundamentally responsible and mature and also kind, and most of his whims involve attempting to spoil his totally unspoilable daughter. And he is perfectly happy to take direction from the women in his life, especially Alexis, which I love. The bit in the S2 opener where he realizes that a) he really has been an asshat to Beckett, and b) he should just apologize, because c) he is acting like an adolescent boy and no grown man should do that... I LOVED that. LOVED.

YES! When I hit that scene, I thought, "I have just watched a man on television behave in a an emotionally mature and responsible way. Wow."
