Because I'm just pissed off enough

Fandom, how you give me deja' vu.

In case I am being too subtle, here's a breakdown.

IF I am supposed to protect my own delicate sensibilities when it comes to fiction that posits an interpretation of the show/book/comic/movie/whatever that actually makes me unhappy, and does in fact often affect my enjoyment of the source itself ( Read more... )

I will ALWAYS take Foucault, and goofy icons.

I'm just kind of DROWNING in the irony here.

They do not realise the fun fannish possibilities in Foucault. Fisting! Drugs! Steamy bathhouse nights! Stuff about how Ancient Greece used to be really gay! I mean, really. Foucault is a slasher's dream academic IMO.

*slashes Foucault and Chomksy*

There has been SO much fury directed at the people who keep insisting fandom should purge itself of Wincest, and god knows, I'm right there with them... if you don't want to see Wincest, it's up to you to tailor your fannish experience to avoid it, not up to the whole of fandom to cater to your whims. But so many of those same people are now claiming with equal fervor that it's fandom's job to structure itself so they never have to see any commentary that makes them uncomfortable, and not only are they apparently completely unable to see the hypocrisy there, they're accusing anyone who gets upset about it of being hysterical, irrational, and looking for reasons to be offended. It boggles the mind.

Yes, exactly. Because the thing is, I do get that I have to make my choices, and that it's up to me to find a way to exist in this situation. I essentially let myself get driven out of one fandom by a prevalent interpretation I found upsetting, and I've more or less found a way to negotiate it this time. But it does take work on my part, and a certain amount of acceptance of a situation I can't change, and I really don't think it's unreasonable to ask the same of my fellow fans. Especially not when there are clearly other people who want to have the same conversations I do.

See, I want to talk with YOU about the gen stuff, and with Eso about the slash stuff, and basically roll around in my crazy mad love for all iterations of Winchesters -- but instead I have been mostly silent. There is just WAY TOO MUCH CRAZY, infighting, and appalling entitled behavior out there.

And I say this as someone who came over to this fandom from HP, so, you know.

*hug*

(You know that despite my perversions, I am very dedicated to making this fandom a happy and welcoming one for you, specifically. History being what it is. I know you know that, but I thought I'd say, just in case.)

I haven't seen (and absolutely haven't gone looking for) the discussions that have sparked this post due to lack of time. But I do know that I am on your side. So I'm just going to sit next to you with my "thank you, but no Wincest, please" stance and my feminist literary theory texts, if that's all right.
