It's his first taste of independence, he probably needs to prove to himself that he can manage on his own for a while. You might get more response if you ask him to IM you back. Young people often prefer IM to phones.

I think everyone who has sent a kid away to school, male or female, has suffered this affliction. And while independence is perfectly well and good it is only freaking reasonable to want to make sure classes are attended and assignments completed and one's offspring has not descended into some animal-house-esque nightmare or alternately, depressed and hiding in a spider hole behind the football field.

Arrrgggg Children are a joy and an affliction and they have no clue what their mothers go through until they themselves are going through the same thing.

I've been seeing a lot of articles lately about helicopter parenting and about how so many kids are just totally unprepared when they get to college because their parents are still trying to run thier lives. Like, badly. These are young, white, relatively well off kids who feel depression and fall apart at the slightest challenge, all because their parents never let them take a tumble on their own.

You are not doing that with your son. I also wish he'd get in touch with you, but at least be proud that you've raised a child who isn't 20 years old going on the still-breastfeeding years.
