Never use heat on a building to remove paint.

Another home destroyed, some odd millions down the tubes and 4 firefighters hurt today because a worker was using a propane torch to remove paint. Heat guns and torches should be illegal to use on the actual building. Take the wood off and use it, that's another story, but never use that method on the building. It's just too freaking dangerous.  ( Read more... )

Call me stupid, but why would anyone use a propane torch to work on a flammable material like paint? Is that standard but insane practice in the paint world?!

I believe the heat makes the paint softer, ane easy to peel off. Of course it also makes the wood hotter, and able to ignight.
I also read after I wrote this that the Hollywood lot fire started from a propane torch, but they were working with asphalt roofing, and I suppose they might have had to use that. They also watched it for an hour after to make sure it was out. But it wasnt.

they use a propane torch to soften the rolls of sheet asphalt to make it sticky tacky to roof and overlaping edges. still accidents do happen. they use the sheet method to layer the stuff, which is safer than the old days of pouring hot liquid asphalt. sounds like somebody was either inexperient or just careless.
