I've heard of it for mosquitoes. But not algae. I'm thinking that it WOULD increase algae, with all that added biomaterial. Wouldn't it?

I don't want to sound pessimistic, but Champ's recurrent pawing is reminding me of a horse I heard about from the pro reiner in the barn... the owners ended up taking him to Moore & Co. in AB. It wasn't good. This was in AB, else WCVM would have been another alternative. But OTOH, in people gastric ulcers take well over a week to heal.

Yeah, that's why I'm not too worried about this little flare up. It passed quickly and I didn't even need to give him Banamine. I'm hoping that it was the Gastra-FX that settled his tummy and that was why he felt better...

See that's what I thought. Good point about mosquito larvae though! I didn't think of that.

That Gastra-FX stuff looks yummy. I think it was the mention of marshmallow. I know I know, not the same...

BTW, if you think getting to a Timmy's on a Saturday during rolluptherim is bad... try getting out of your driveway when you live across the road from one. There's a LOT of people lined up on the road.

Are you doing ulcerguard or anything like that?

LOL! That would SUCK!

Actually, the Gastra-FX seems to taste pretty good! I don't know why he objects to it - I think it's got more to do with the shooting it in his mouth, but he's not yet prepared to just lick it up.

No, none of that - the vets didn't recommend it at all. They seemed to think that Gastra-FX would be sufficient on it's own. So far so good!

Our cousins next door who had horses had goldfish in theirs. As long time keeper of goldfish, both indoor and out, the goldfish will eat the algae especially if the fish aren't being fed other food. The goldifsh don't really contribute to the algae, sunlight does.

Very cool. Thanks! I've never had goldfish, and they always seem to have dirty tanks, so I was worried that they were actually contributing, not helping.

Goldfish are one of the dirtiest fish you can have. They are part of the carp family. In a big water tank though, I think its fine.

Is there a cleaner fishy that can do the same job?

Yup, I've heard of lots of people using goldfish to keep the tanks clean. Never tried it myself, but I hear it's a great method.

sure! we had goldfish in our tanks all the time :) it helps a bit with the algae, but mostly to eat the mosquito larva before they hatch :P

*hugs* for Champ

I've heard of using goldfish in water tanks, I guess they'll eat the bits of feed and hay and whatever else gets in there too. One place I boarded left them out year round in the big stock tank:)

Glad to hear Champ is doing alright for the most part!
