PotC: AWE, first time

So, yep, I went and saw the film, finally. Am still digesting, but on the whole I enjoyed it (the rather full theater aside; at least it wasn't too noisy, although the couple next to me did whisper to each other a few times). Will have to go again, no question about that... maybe later this week. Wrote another Dissonance drabble during the ads ( Read more... )

books, potc

I found PotC profoundly non-sucky, which is to say it was about like the second one, just without all the stupid land-locked set pieces (the wheel fight, the cannibal scene, and so forth). It was nice to be able to go out with the wife and have someone else watch the baby and we had a good time at the (packed!) theater.

I certainly don't think of myself as more critical than you, so I wonder if my tolerance is lower because I don't see such "worlds" as a template in which to write, and thus the flaws speak more loudly to me.

The first movie had such lightness and whimsy. The plot was small, profoundly personal, and the relationships delightful. The second and third ... made me laugh on a regular basis, but didn't enchant me.

I'm not, actually, a tremendously critical film-goer. *g* For me it's largely about the characters in these films; the lengthy fighting scenes in any of them don't do much for me (save the swordfight between Jack and Will early in the first one, which I adore). And I've thought about, written about, and read enough fic in this universe to have perhaps a different take on the third film, and different things I'm looking for in it, than someone who isn't invested in that way in the world.

"Profoundly non-sucky" -- *laughs*

Well, I thought the second one was lousy with a few good moments, so ... non-sucky is a bonus!

I like the characters a lot, but I felt that the second movie in particular was trying really hard to be a good video game and amusement park ride, and that we didn't really see the characters that much.

The second was my least favorite of the three, I would say. Except that I did like Norrington in it. *g*

I fear I'm one of those people who whisper to their partner all through a movie... Is it really that annoying? We just can't help it...

It is annoying to me, if I can hear it. Laughing is fine, or squeaks of surprise or oohs or even an "oh no" at some desperate moment on screen, but I don't want to hear other people's verbal commentary. If it's truly whispered, and the theater is empty enough that the people are sitting several rows away, so I can't actually hear, then wth. But this was crowded and they were in the two seats next to me. So yeah, it was bothersome. And I figure folks can help it unless they have serious Tourette's syndrome or something. [Clearly the more I think about this the more it bugs me...]

We must never ever see a movie together then, should the opportunity ever arise. I'm a compulsive MST-er...

It's fun, isn't it?
