Having just participated in friending memes on both LJ and DW, I feel a certain obligation to post something, you know? (Not obligation in a negative sense. Just... like it would be appropriate, so as not to seem like I friended under false pretenses.)

Hey, my guy is a historian as well (American; his diss was on Protestant-Jewish relations in the Gilded Age). Now he's responsible for the APUSH uprising, lol. If you're interested, he's sanpaku. His posts are generally friends-only, so tell him you're a historian and I sent you. :)
I'm going to check out your slow-cooker tandoori recipe! It sounds amazing!

Before I try tandoori cauliflower: do you think that almond yogurt would work out OK taste-wise, or would that just be a non-starter?

I'm not religious either but I like the idea of people coming together once a month do something like that.
*nods* Yes, the community/social thing can be hard to manage if one is not religious. There just aren't that many other opportunities in this society to easily find like-minded folks. The internet is a boon that way, but in-person has its advantages.

i've found it at home improvement stores like home depot or lowes (for less than amazon is charging).
i've also used this kind of non-slip mat under larger rugs http://www.amazon.com/Optimum-Technologies-Gripper-Runners-25-Feet/dp/B000209YT6/

I really like the idea of a community meal. I'm from Wisconsin and now live in Minnesota, and we are a hardcore pot lucking sort of crowd in these parts!
Also, this: I'm fine with that, but we need to actually DO it, not just say it should happen. That's where these suggestions/plans sometimes fall apart HA! This happens with us constantly. We both agree we really should get this/do that/whatever, but actually doing it? Yeah ... :)

Our other big social/community thing is a holiday party that we give annually and to which we invite various neighbors, friends, and work mates. I make serious appetizers and we have hot spiced cider and coffee, no alcohol. Usually the weekend closest to St. Lucia's Day (Dec. 13), because my SO spent some time in Sweden on a sabbatical and that's a big holiday there. But that's only once a year, and not a potluck!
