At the very least, the Farmer's ads aren't offensive.

Unfortunately, that's really all I know about either.

Good luck!

Well, that's better than nothing. ;-)

Thanks - we need it!

Get a quote from Farmer's, stat. Definitely your current insurer is trying to come up with reasons NOT to keep your business. Their stupidity!

Good luck with the roof. Ask the people to check and see if you have sufficient ventilation and circulation in the roof. When we had our roof redone, we put in two new vents since the single low-rise vent we had was clearly inadequate even to our clueless eyes. Interestingly, only one of the roofers suggested the venting - the one that we went with in the end since his quote was clear, thorough and thoughtful!

I am pretty sure Farmer's is one of the ones SO has gotten a quote from already, so yeah.

Good point about the ventilation, too. We probably cannot have a new vent put on in front - historic preservation district and they are very picky about any visible exterior changes - but the back, probably.

Our vents are on the back since that's the standard hereabouts - they work very efficiently and come in a variety of medium to high-rise options.

But, yeah, there is a reason why we call our beloved home 'the money pit' - since last summer? New furnace and A/C, new door, new dryer, new kitchen faucet, new bathroom sink and who knows what's up next? Certainly not that new kitchen I've coveted since we moved in!

Hear hear on the kitchen. We still have the original stove from when the house was first built - it's a 77-year-old Chambers stove.

I suppose to be fair, mostly the huge expenses/repairs/replacements have been somewhat spread out - never a year with so many things as you have had in the past 12 months.

What is Angie's List?

Ugh to all the problems.

http://www.angieslist.com/ - it's a site for reviews of all kinds of service companies/businesses, including health care. No anonymous reviews, only ones from members, and they're vetted so businesses can't write good ones for themselves or bad ones for their competitors. Local businesses - they started in Ohio, IIRC, but are now in a lot of cities (if probably not all, esp. not small towns necessarily) across the country. So kind of like combining the Yellow Pages, the Better Business Bureau, and your neighbors' reviews all in one go.

Tried to call, but thought since I didn't get you I'd put in my $.02 here. We have Amica, have had for years, and have been very happy. We haven't had a homeowner's claim, but have had auto claim due to a "car skating on ice" accident. Amica was very easy to deal with, and the auto body guys said they were always a good company for them to work with - no dickering about claims, etc. So that's what I know!

I would definitely not go with someone who wants you to redo your driveway... that is beyond ridiculous, given that I can't think what circumstance they would ever have to pay a driveway-based claim! I think the roof thing is sketchy enough...

Good luck, and we'll talk soon.

I'll tell SO about you guys having Amica.

I'm on reference desk tonight, so here for another hour. Hopefully will remember/find time to call this weekend!
