Since the new year began, I've been slaving away on my first novel since 2006, and I've already gotten the first three chapters - about 20,000 words - down.
The only trouble is I have no idea what I'm going to do with it once its done, or who the audience for it really is, but at least I'm having fun with it. And doing something productive with my

And indeed...the important thing is that you're enjoying writing. Kind of like what I'm doing with my own stuff, though it's going slower than what you're turning out!

I'm sure it'll be an interesting read. I know at least one person who managed to get his NaNoWriMo novel published recently (I bought a copy myself). Get it down, edit it, and only *then* worry about getting it published. Finding a publisher who may be interested in it is a different stage, and I think it's something you can only do properly once you have the finished work in hand.
So write! Write like the wind! :-)

Also, you should join the august_writing community! The idea is that you write something (it doesn't particularly matter what or how much, although the maintainer does offer suggestions) every day in the month of August, just to hone your writing skills for NaNoWriMo two months later.
