LJ is a great place! I lurked for a long time before actually getting actively involved, but I certainly don't regret coming out of lurkerdom.

LOL my husband has the vague idea that I have a blog, but he'll never see its content. I find that LJ is that kind of place for me too, being able to ramble about fandom and real life without being looked askance because of such things as smut.

Glad you're feeling more comfortable. Yes, it's nice to have a space in which to be oneself, and be accepted for that.
