I saw on Twitter earlier this week that the new DW companion was going to be announced "tomorrow"! And it made me sad that I just didn't care. I didn't spend the next day avidly hitting refresh and checking for updates; in fact I completely forgot about it until at least another day had gone by ( Read more... )

Sadly, I agree. I'm really, really, really hoping he can do something different with her - but I find the choice really safe and conservative and boring. That's not a knock on the actress - just a knock on casting.

And having seen a dodgy version of the first trailer for series seven... yawn.

I saw from somewhere on Twitter that the first official trailer will be released soon (maybe even tomorrow) but I'm so uninterested I'm not going to bother looking for it, so I won't see it unless it's on the telly. I'm not avoiding it or anything like that, I just don't care all that much :(

I've never been a great advocate for having an alien or someone from another era or a male (solo) companion just for the sake of it. But I'm definitely advocating that we need a change from a "whacky" young, white female.

I believe the trailer is due out tomorrow.

I'm hoping she's an alien.

That would at least, be something. I can understand why an alien companion needs to look human. But even then - SM could have cast a human that looks like something other than a 20-something dolly-bird!

we did at least get three quite different regular companions on his watch.

Yes. Each companion and each relationship with Ten was very different. I very much hope Moffat will give us something new with the new actress even if her look is not all that different. Looks are only part of it after all but Moffat's writing does tend to be less diverse as well.

Even though at first, I thought Martha was too similar to Rose (young, very pretty female in love with the Doctor), I realised quite quickly that wasn't the case, so yes, I hope for something different to unfold.

I won't hold my breath, though.

I am reserving judgement until we know anything about her character, other than I like her eyebrows and think she looks adorbs. I just hope she's not another Pond.

I switched off at the insistence on her whackiness, the fact that she's "faster than Matt" and that she'll lead the Doctor "a merry dance".

Same old, same old.

She's a lovely looking girl, it's true, but it's time for something different and we know SM can write older companions and male companions. Why - other from that age old reason of putting in some eye-candy for the dads - is he stuck in this rut?

I think everyone's been stuck on young-earth-girl since about Jo Grant, exceptions obviously happening on occasion.

TBH my main worry is she'll be crowded out by the Ponds :S I don't like when a companion isn't the most important person in the Doctor's life at that time.

So the Ponds are leaving before the new Companion arrives, so I don't think that will be an issue.

I'm disappointed as well. There was a rumor going around that Ben Browder's guest appearance was actually his intro as the new companion. I kinda doubted that, but I think he would have been great as a companion, especially if he was a human but from the past, a la Jamie. Now that would have been different.

However, I'm always willing to give new companions/Doctors a chance, as this is Who, after all.

Yeah. I suppose that would've been too much to hope for. It's not that I won't give her a chance - I looked forward to Amy Pond, although at the time, was concerned that here was yet another very young female companion. Sadly, I never warmed to her, although I'm fond of Rory and will miss him. My complaint is that this looks like yet ANOTHER instance of "safe" casting. Let's face it - there's no way that Catherine Tate would have been cast had she not already been a very well-known TV star, because she was in her thirties and built like a woman rather than a stick-insect. I'd like to see something a bit more unexpected now, given that DW is very well established and surely can afford to do something a bit different.

DAMNIT! lj just ate my comment *sigh*

anyway, the gist of it was that I didn't bother looking up who the new companion was either, and only found out because hubby told me.

and the sound bite crap we're hearing about her character isn't inspiring me any either, plus we know we'll still have River lurking around too.

so, erm, remind me again why I'm still watching this show?
