Art is never a good idea on paper, weather your motive is world-changing, fame, fortune, helping others, or whatever. There's always something else you could be doing that would be more effective in reaching whatever goal.
We do it because we cant imagine not doing it, because something is out of balance without it, because we are compelled by forces unknown.
I think that art truly can change the world, but never because someone set's out with that in mind. It happens subtly and you only realize what happened after years and years have past. There are creative works whose influence make so many ripples that we cant imagine what the world would be like without them having been in it. It seldom if ever coincides with popular movements within the art world.
yeah, i agree with that. we should get together and talk about this stuff sometime. are you still in toronto or did you move. im so out of it. whenever youre around though.
I'm in Winnerpeg and it looks like I won't be back in Toronto until May, but then it'll be to host the IKT post-congress event, which means NO time because I'll be shuttling approx 20 international curators around to show 'em whats we gots ;-)

I think that art can change the world, and does. I think, with out art and the expression of that part of people, we would lead pretty useless lives. It can be a noble expression, or it can be base. But I find certain things that should be said are only able to be said through art in any of its various mediums. Sometimes it's not even something that needs to be said, but more a voice that needs to be heard

yeah, i agree with all of that. i guess i meant that its a more subtle kind of changing the world. it wont end poverty or war or illness in any obvious way, but maybe it can change some important decisions that lead to or away from those things.
i like your idea of a "great revolution of the soul", although you and i know that were not talking about the religiously defined soul.
i think youre right that people ahve forgotten what being really happy feels like. most people mistake being numb, the absence of pain or sadness, for being happy.
