What books do you turn to when you're having the world's shittiest day and the universe seems to be knocking you down and then kicking you in the teeth? What makes a comfort read for you?

Wow, your list comes with a surprise ending! Lol. I love all of Chris Van Allsburg's books, they are so so lovely. My personal favorite is "The Widow's Broom" which I get out of the library to read pretty much every year at Halloween. I also just read "The Library Lion" for the first time very recently, after I saw a poster of the lion up at the NYC public library on my visit there.

This is such a great idea, I think I need to go make a comfort books list as well!

I'm so thrilled that my friends are picking up on my comfort read idea that I just might explode. *bursts!*

And you are so eloquent ... few things comfort me like snuggling under the covers with a book that blows away various crappy childhood memories and replaces them with a childhood that I wish I had.

But I'm ashamed to say that I haven't read a single book on your list. I see a visit to the picture book/junior fiction section of my library in my very near future.

And The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death sounds like the perfect Christmas gift for my sister's 10-year-old step-son. :)

That's okay that you haven't read the books on my list, I didn't recognize most of the ones on your list OR Odd's! I look forward to your reactions when you read some of the books on mine, though.

The only problem I foresee with you getting a copy of Snarkout boys is how hard it is to find a copy. I managed to get an old used library copy via EBay years ago, so you might check there, or AbeBooks, or another online used book search & buy engine.

I'm trying to remember if the book that IS in print has Snarkout Boys in it -- it's called "Four By Pinkwater" (or maybe "Five By Pinkwater", I'm not sure). I can also recommend "The Neddiad" and "The Yggyssey" by Daniel Pinkwater, two of his more recent YA books, and yes, they are a very distant take on Homer's two novels. :-D

Oh that's too bad that the Snarkout Boys' avocado adventure is out of print. Well, maybe I'll just set my mind to ferreting out a copy in time for next Christmas.

It sure will be fun to compare notes. Maybe we should do some comfort reading over at oddlittlecat?

The sequel, 'Baconburg Horror' is decidedly *weird* (and that's ME calling something weird) -- on the other hand, 10 year old boys are nothing if not weird!

Comfort reading would be a great thing at OddLittleCat!
