Bugger fuck...

I didn't check on the rabbits all day today, trying to behave and stay away from them. So I'm not sure what happened. I went out around 1:30 am with the flashlight, wondering if I might catch a glimpse of momma rabbit. But no, instead I find the glowing feline eyes of the neighbourhood menace to rodent and small animal kind, Sidney, standing over ( Read more... )

At least the fucker didn't get all of them. I'm sad there's only two left but at least they're a bit older now. Even those two wouldn't likely have made it if we'd taken them in when we first found them.

Here's Hamilton Bylaw: http://www.hamilton.ca/NR/rdonlyres/1A17477E-0670-45BF-853C-A8DF28933EF1/0/HamiltonBylawNo86343.pdf

"No cat owner shall allow or permit his or her cat to be at large"

Double check with Animal Control that it's ok to turn in an animal that you trap on your own property when you know where it lives.

I had a dream last night that I took in and was rearing a baby duck. Heh.

There's pretty much no chance of them having survived if we'd taken them in and I'd tried to raise them. Even seasoned rehabbers have a hard time raising baby bunnies, unless their speciality is baby bunnies pretty much exclusively.

I've printed the by-law and am calling animal control tomorrow, see if I can borrow a cat havahart, as they are going for about 100 bucks a piece (ugh!).

The owners are going to get fair warning from me, and possibly a warning from animal control. After that, all bets are off and if I can catch him, I'm taking him in. Just because they are prey species doesn't mean the have to end up being someone's lunch.

Heh. It's the Weekend of Adopted Animals!

They look adorable.

I know our bunnymom returned to the site of her nest the following day - hopefully yours will do the same to pick up her kids, the rest having bolted for the underbrush.*

* What, I'm allowed to hope for the best..

Yeah, I was thinking that when I brought them in (using the tank that I was offering to you for Righty the Mouse).

Well, the law tends to be on your side! By-laws generally prohibit cats going onto other people's property, and will impound them. I'm generally against cats being impounded, but when there are animals who are becoming a serious nuisance and the owners are being wilfully unhelpful, it starts to look like a good option. Constant calls to Animal Control were needed on my parents' road against a neighbour who refused to keep her dogs on her property. The one afternoon we called when we saw both dogs were stretched out sunning themselves on the middle of the road!

I've had many fights with folks (including my own family) that cats belong indoors.

I'm with you. I think it's stupidity to let a cat outside both for the sake of the wildlife and for the cat (which is why I tried for so long to get Sparty inside).

So far so good. 2 bunnies still in burrow.

Personally.. while it's sad to see baby bunnies get eaten, yeah, it's circle of life and such for the wild animals. :P That said, it's very good of you to try and save them. I do hope the little guys grow well.

I don't have any issue with circle of life so long as the animals belong in the circle!
