The Mikado is another one of those things no one's allowed to talk about/put on right now because it's offensive. Which like... yeah, it is, I'm not going to defend it. I mean, I think it's more a commentary on British society than Japanese, but I'm not going to argue with any asian person who is offended by it.
But I sure hope in 20 years people can relax a bit and appreciate it for what it is, because it's entirely fabulous.

But yeah, I'm not going to try defend it to people who find it awful. I'm just going to play it at home and go watch it when the various gilbert and sullivan societies put it on.
