To my surprise, I received an email from my Japanese host family (actually, host mother) yesterday. She was very sweet and attached a picture of the family. It consists of the mom, dad, three little girls and a baby boy. They are all so adorable and I'm really looking forward to meeting them. Japan and why I'm glad that I’m on the quarter system
So I’ll be upfront about this; I’m starting to panic about my trip to Japan.

Although I think that pretty much everyone who reads this journal already knows, I passed my candidacy exam on Tuesday!!! I am now officially a Ph.D. candidate. Which is a huge relief that I don’t think has sunk in yet (because my mind is already on the next few things that I have to do). Stupid Exam
I’m tired of studying.
Candidacy exams suck. All of my committee members have had me in class, they know me and what I’m capable of. So why do we need to have hours of grilling just to prove that I’m … what? What is up with this year? I’m working so much more than last year, but I feel like I’m spinning my wheels. Everything is dragging on so much longer than I expected, things that I hoped would be done by now are not (particularly the ex-advisor paper), which means that I’m behind where I want to be. How soon until Jan is over??
This quarter is whipping me. Or at least January is. I have so very much to get done in the next week. I HAVE to get this nematocyst paper fixed tomorrow and sent out to my overlords…er, coauthors. Back into the swing of things

1. My SICB talk
2. meeting with my ex-advisor to rip up our paper
