Cutler Beckett had been young enough once to believe that there was nothing money could not buy. Everyone and everything had a price; he did not like to think of his naïvety. Wealth was merely one tool in life, but, while extraordinarily useful, it was not a panacea. Money was only the half of it and Lord Beckett learned the whole of it was colder than gold and far sharper. Obverse and reverse; master and servant: there must be two sides to every coin. Did not God have the Devil; did not Lilith have Eve?
There were things that money could not buy. Thankfully, those things were usually remedied by a blade, or poison, but the details were beyond him. Money could not buy loyalty. It could not buy perfect lines in perfect ledgers, nor the right envelope at the right moment. A coin could not buy its other half. It could not buy the dark and knowing stare, nor the hands in black leather that seized from the shadows, nor the scrape of even and ivory teeth against sultry and soft skin, nor breath tainted bitter by black tea…
There were some things that money could buy, but for everything else there was Mr. Mercer.
