so here's an update

It's amazing how easily people get distracted by completely fact-free hysteria these days. It goes without saying, of course, that the so-called "Ground Zero Mosque" is not at Ground Zero - in fact, it's not even visible from Ground Zero - and it's also not a mosque. It's not even distinguishable from the local surroundings, in fact:

Who was it on youtube...damnit I should know this but can't go on youtube to confirm...ah thanks google! thunderf00t! He made a video that said (basically) that if Christians bombed mecca they should not expect to be able to build a church or community center near mecca ten years later.

Then he added the cavaet that we currently CANNOT enter mecca anyway since they actively discriminate against non-muslims there. So it makes no sense for muslims to talk about tolerance when they don't exercise it themselves.

Not sure what to make of that, but it made sense to me.

This is an interesting controversy to me, as it's putting the spotlights on the hypocrites on both sides of the fence. On the Republican hypocrites for not standing up for property rights, and on the Democratic hypocrites for not standing up for social liberty.

I think it demonstrates that most politicians care far more about their chances of getting re-elected than they do about standing up for the principles they supposedly stand for. The number of Democrats who have actually stood up for civil liberties is disturbingly small. While I've been pretty disappointed with a lot of Obama's policies I have to give him credit here; he's pretty much stuck to his guns as far as I can tell.
