so here's an update

It's amazing how easily people get distracted by completely fact-free hysteria these days. It goes without saying, of course, that the so-called "Ground Zero Mosque" is not at Ground Zero - in fact, it's not even visible from Ground Zero - and it's also not a mosque. It's not even distinguishable from the local surroundings, in fact:

Who was it on youtube...damnit I should know this but can't go on youtube to confirm...ah thanks google! thunderf00t! He made a video that said (basically) that if Christians bombed mecca they should not expect to be able to build a church or community center near mecca ten years later.

Then he added the cavaet that we currently CANNOT enter mecca anyway since they actively discriminate against non-muslims there. So it makes no sense for muslims to talk about tolerance when they don't exercise it themselves.

Not sure what to make of that, but it made sense to me.

It is but I'm just quoting Thunderf00t. He attempted to liken it to being 'fair'

If we blew up a Muslim building then tried to build near it, would we balk when they say 'oh c'mon think of the children!'

(paraphrased)

Really my stance is that as long as the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed, I don't see a problem. Why would I see a problem?

^_^ yes yes. I think I should qualify - I agree that if the argument was limited to 'b-but mecca', other than the asinine and insufficient metaphor, I would be loathed agree. There's better stances (like mine as above imo) to take.

Where's Aaron btw?

I wasn't aware that Americans would so readily stoop down to the level of mad theocracies.

I've been busy with work. I probably won't be replying to comments as regularly as I used to. But yeah basically just because they do shit in a Middle Eastern theocracy (which is supported by our government btw) is no reason for us to emulate them. We're supposed to be better than them.

Thunderf00t's also losing it lately, behaving much more like the average right-wing nut as far as "the Muslims" are concerned. He tends to see them as a globally uniform monoculture, when in reality an American Muslim and a Saudi Arabian Muslim can be utterly different. When the hard-liners in Saudi Arabia restrict individual freedom, that's not the personal fault or choice of every Muslim in the world, and it's not right that every Muslim should be treated as accountable. Persecuting American Muslims because of the crimes or policies of extremists in other countries is a bit like claiming African Americans shouldn't be allowed to vote because many African nations don't enjoy or practice democracy. Absolutely, the conservative Muslim nations are among the least free societies in the world today, but that doesn't automatically condemn everyone who belongs to the same religion. After all, Michael Caine - a Christian - is happily married to a Muslim woman who doesn't spend her time trying to convert or kill him. T-Pain is also Muslim, ( ... )
