I drove into a pheasant this afternoon. Stupid suicidal bird. Sadly, driving around the rural fastnesses I work in, there are a lot of pheasants around at this time of year. Well they do tend to be a bit battered when they've been hit, especially if they've gone under the wheels. Mind you, if you hit a deer, that's different. If your car has escaped being written off, then all you nned to do is borrow a butcher and sling it in the freezer.

Oh yes, I know those stupid birds. I was driving (read "being driven")with John this summer, as he went from Hawick over some very high hills to have his car repaired, and we were blocked by FLOCKS of them, though I think ours were grouse. Maybe. They were youngsters, being raised for game shooting , probably now. No sport in that at all-- these birds wouldn't have the sense to get off the road. We could have filled John's pantry and had grouse for all the neighbours if we
d wanted.

That's what's so daft about it, they're not even really wild birds. They've been raised and then released specifically so that people with more money than sense can pay vast sums to fire guns at them. Maybe even hit them.
