I've been using Firefox for over a year, since it was Firebird, actually. I haven't had a pop-up since. I also have an extension that blocks most ads. For example I can go to ff.net and all I see is the logo and the fic. For that alone I will prosletyse the world over. I also have an lj client for Firefox, installed as a toolbar button, which is great, and I've got a nifty set of little buttons rather than the original default ones.
I presume you can install the google toolbar, I've never used it so don't see the need. There's an option in the toolbars menu to add toolbars so I assume you would be able to.
However there is one reason I will always recommend it over IE - SECURITY. It's not part of your operating system. It's safer. It gets udated as needed. A potential security hole was discovered last week and a patch issued at the weekend.

Do you know if I can I install the Google toolbar in that browser? How is it blocking the newer popups that seem to be able to bypass popup blockers?
I might give it a try on the laptop.....
