I love this Arlo Guthrie song (written by Steve Goodman) from his 1972 album Hobo's Lullaby. It's about a train ride from Chicago to New Orleans on the Illinois Central Railroad's City of New Orleans. The lyrics are so beautiful and nostalgic. It's my favorite train song (makes me cry!) and the video is really awesome, too. Some of the visuals ( Read more... )

Yes, so great. I hadn't heard it for a long time either, until it showed up in my youtube feed (I've been watching train vids). I hadn't seen this vid before and love that they use the older (possibly the original) version of The City of New Orleans train.

That is a great song! I've never really taken note of the words, so I'm glad you included them. They really set the mood!

So great! I'm glad you enjoyed seeing the lyrics here. Having access to the words helps make the song more meaningful and yes "they really set the mood!"

I love train travel - one time when we came to the States we travelled up the East Coast from Florida to Boston on the train (stopping off every now and again to stay in different places along the way). It was so nice and people were really friendly.

I'm glad you love train travel and had a good experience going from Florida to Boston by train. Yay that people were so friendly! My last train trip was from NYC to Seattle. It was amazing seeing the country this way.

*BIG hugs* for the happy tears, my friend! I love this song so much but never knew what it was called :) thanks for the share, and the lyrics!! I love when there are lyrics. ^-^

...Okay my eyes are stinging now, too LOL. I just know my dad would've turned this UP and tapped his foot along on the gas/brake pedals, making me lurch all around his big ol' silver Oldsmobile. Good, good, good memories... ♥

Awww *BIGGEST HUGS* Yay that you love the song and know the name of it now. :) You're very welcome! And yay that the lyrics are helpful. Seeing the lyrics makes it even more meaningful. I've been memorizing the words, which is taking me a little while to do, lol.

All the lyrics are great, but I especially love this part

And the sons of Pullman porters

And the sons of engineers

Ride their fathers' magic carpets made of steel

Mothers with their babes asleep

Are rockin' to the gentle beat

And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel

Your eyes are stinging, thinking of your dad turning this UP and tapping his feet... what a beautiful memory, hon.♥
