Thanks. It did turn out quite well. :) I'm hoping to sort out the 'patio' fairly soon, but the ground is very un-even and the rose bush is in an awkward place. I might just level it up a bit and put some weed retardent fabric down.
When I put the tarp out, and the rocks, my roses bloomed like crazy. By not letting the weeds compete with them, they got all the water and nutriants to themselves. huge difference!
Makes sense. The ground is covered by dead leaves and twigs from the tree (behind the loungers in the photo) so that's slowing down weeds at the moment, but it looks really untidy. I watered the rose for the first time this year today, the leaves were going a bit brown. The other rose bushes have lovely green leaves, but no flowers. They're not the same type - they produce lots of small blooms (theoretically).
Cool area, that'd be fun to work with. Dead leaves are a perfect mulch though you're right, they're not as pretty as lava rock:) I envy you guys and your ability to grow roses at all, I'm really limited here.

And a good shoot of your 'before' garden :D I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

The playhouse is a longer term project. :)
