Mattie has settled in at the Mansion--well, as best as she thinks she can. She's mostly content, even though Tom Chaney is still nagging at her in the back of her head. She can't help but think about him, really, and a part of her still wishes to pursue him

Niko of course has to wander out, and will pause before he goes on his way.

"Where your knife?"

Yes, that's his way of saying hello.

She looks up at him. "I prefer my gun," she explains. "But hello."

"You haven't answered the question."

Niko crosses his arms. He's never going to back down on safety measures.

"Are you going to insist on bothering me with this question?" Mattie pretends to ignore him for a moment, staring at the gun. "And I was under the impression that I was safe here. At least, if I'm armed I will be."

Here's the alien with the telekinesis! Zhane'll wander over to Mattie, smiling and in an excellent mood. "Hi there!"

"Hello," she says without looking up. After a moment, though, she does indeed look over at him, and actually smiles a little.

"Hey." Zhane wanders over, then. "Whatcha up to?"

[gritted]

"I am cleaning my--father's--gun," she explains. "I have inherited it from him, and I intend to take the best possible care of it."

Helen wanders out, and when she sees a child with a gun, she can't help but stare at the girl.

"-- Good afternoon," she says, gently enough.

She's going to want to talk the kid out of holding that gun, because seriously, what.

Mattie would argue that her gun is very necessary, but we digress.

"Good afternoon," she replies, still cleaning.

"It's fairly fresh," Helen ventures patiently. "Aren't your hands cold?"

Yes, she's easing up into the topic.

[gritted]

She shakes her head. "No, they are not. I am quite comfortable, as a matter of fact. Are you cold?"

Hatter's wandering around a bit, being stuck here makes him restless. When he spots Mattie sitting on the porch cleaning her weapon he whistles loudly, leaning over for a better look. "That's quite a gun you've got there."

She looks up at him, her face still. "It was my father's," she replies. "I inherited it when he died."

[wears_a_hat]

"Not a bad thing to inherit," he says, nodding approvingly. Hatter may not really get it. Hard to say whether or not he ever actually had a father to lose.

"Yes, it is," she says, going back to cleaning the gun. "I am Mattie Ross. Who are you?"

He's not the best at making good conversation, but here's Melou. He's wandering past, and when he spots Mattie's gun, he pauses, trying not to make it obvious that he's staring. He has had some (rather limited) experience with guns at the Mansion, but he still thinks they're weird.

She notices him staring after a while, and looks over at him. "Hello."

Melou hesitates for just a moment. He doesn't really want to have a conversation. Trying to be nice to people is too much effort.

"Good day," he returns, a bit reluctantly.

"What are you looking at?" she asks innocently.
