Mattie has settled in at the Mansion--well, as best as she thinks she can. She's mostly content, even though Tom Chaney is still nagging at her in the back of her head. She can't help but think about him, really, and a part of her still wishes to pursue him

She might hear a quiet footstep behind her, and if she looks up, she might spot a young man just a few years older than her, eying the weapon in her hands quizzically.

[gritted]

Mattie looks up. "Good day," she says, a bit stiffly.

[77th_earl]

"Good day," the young man replies, eying the weapon. "I don't mean to intrude, but might I ask what is that...object?" There were no firearms in Gormenghast, so he's not sure what she has there.

[gritted]

"It is a gun," she replies simply. "You have never seen one before?"

[sophie_darling]

Around the corner of the porch, there's a little girl of nine years, peering at Mattie.

She's met Hunny, and sometimes there are lots of children about, but they never seem to stay, and Sophie has learned that children can be fun but that she therefore should not get attached.

But she's still curious.

Mattie's still cleaning the gun, but eventually notices the young girl and turns towards her.

"Hello," she says simply, smiling a little.

[sophie_darling]

Sophie waves, a touch shyly, at the other girl. "-- hullo," she ventures.

[gritted]

Mattie makes sure to hide the gun a little. "You can come over," she says.

The porch happens to be one of Adrian's favourite places at the Mansion. Used to? -- ah well; it's beginning to feel likewise, again.

"Quite a nice one you've got there, baby," he comments, lighting up a cigarette.

[gritted]

She looks up at him. "Do you like it? It was my father's."

[iwalkindreams]

"It's quite alright, yes - but aren't you a bit -- er -- fragile to handle it?"

[gritted]

"--Fragile? I assure you, sir, I am anything but."
