She might hear a quiet footstep behind her, and if she looks up, she might spot a young man just a few years older than her, eying the weapon in her hands quizzically.

"Good day," the young man replies, eying the weapon. "I don't mean to intrude, but might I ask what is that...object?" There were no firearms in Gormenghast, so he's not sure what she has there.

Around the corner of the porch, there's a little girl of nine years, peering at Mattie.

She's met Hunny, and sometimes there are lots of children about, but they never seem to stay, and Sophie has learned that children can be fun but that she therefore should not get attached.

But she's still curious.

The porch happens to be one of Adrian's favourite places at the Mansion. Used to? -- ah well; it's beginning to feel likewise, again.

"Quite a nice one you've got there, baby," he comments, lighting up a cigarette.
