Today was just a strange, strange day at the public library.
I'm hoping Annie will come around so I don't have to ship her back to Florida. The kitten really is cute, and now she has a name, thanks to Tonya. We're calling her T.K., aka, Tiny Kitty, aka the name of Jeremy Sisto's character from Suicide Kings.
I got really excellent advice from the shelter people about how to introduce my cats when I brought the new one home. Check out some of these tips: http://www.ddfl.org/behavior/catintro.pdf
Thank you for the link. I had read a few similar guides, but this one has good suggestions that I hadn't seen before. I know I have been rushing the introduction, mostly because I feel guilty that the kitten's stuck in a room alone and I'm gone so much of the day, but I'll just have to start trading off who's locked up so she can have some free time in the rest of the apartment and hopefully Annie will come around eventually. It would probably be a little easier if the new kitten was male, but that's not the kitten that ran into the library, so what can you do.
Just butting in to say that it is early days yet with the kitties. I also disobeyed the "mixed gender directive" and got a female kitten when I already had a female cat. My apartment is not really set up for lengthy segregations. So I broke the introduction rules by just letting them mingle. There was hissing and chasing. I worried. I gave lots of extra love to the adult cat in an effort to calm her down, and I gave everyone extra food and treats, and plenty of toys. I was scared I had made a mistake. Now, a month later, it is a lot friendlier and today I caught them actually playing together. So don't despair so early in the game. Give them time. And good luck.
Thanks, I really appreciate the encouragement. It's just been a really long day, most of which I spent trying not to cry because of work weirdness, so the cat fight just sort of sent me over the edge. I'm sure they'll be fine in the long run, I'm just stressed out about life. But again, thanks, it really helps to know what your experience has been. The last time I introduced a new cat was with Annie, and she was all of six weeks old and completely non-threatening, so it was easy. That was seven years ago, so it's been awhile.
