{Food for Thought}

A thought just hit me as I was drawing this morning, so I wanted to pose the question to the rest of my flist.

Do you find it easier to portray a female or male character in your writing/art/comics/stories?

I know of some friends who say they find it easier to write from a male's perspective rather than a female's, even if they're female. Vice Versa ( Read more... )

I find writing as guys easier because I'm not one. Work with me here.

At one time every story I wrote had a female main chara. The problem started when delving into different female mindsets even would immediately bring up ANY female I personally know. Now they say it's good to put a bit of yourself into your art but when you find yourself taking your characters TOO personally, it becomes VERY hard to write a story without making it an autobiography. Every female became either an archetype, a stereotype of my ideal woman, or just ME which makes it more difficult to write. While I can't say I know how a man thinks, experience has shown that men are just as capable of thinking the same way a woman can, and half the fun is in creating something that is completely different from my personality and sticking to it.

Most importantly as much as I have a stake in them, at least I'm not imagining ME in bed with some fictional character.

OOh actually, that's a really good point. It is more fun I guess I'm just not too used to doing stuff like that yet haha XD Thanks for the input!

....well that's true.

From 5 to 15, I have been drawing male as my main characters, but that's not because I can't portray females, more like I didn't THINK of trying cause I'm so used to shonen mangas. (but the fact that I can't draw females back then is absolute truth OTLLLL)

Then I started drawing some females main and I find it very interesting cause I never create many female charas. And I'd admit my female characters don't really appeal much at first cause they're flat-chested I'm not used to it hence making them quite stereotypical.(bleh) But now I think I'm pretty ok with it and in fact, drawing girls is quite fun to me ( ... )

LOL YOU WERE BORN INTO SHOUNEN HAHA >D

Lol you don't like flat chested girls haha?

Yeah the days of Digimon and Pokemon were the best days to talk to your age group guys because they're probably one of the only few who would actually talk about it haha >D

Yeah that's true. I always did wonder though if drawing shounen meant i had to think like Ichigo from Bleach (just and example of course haha). Well there are quite a few shounen artists who are female. The one I can think most prominently of right now is like Hoshino Katsura O_o; .... I THINK she's female.

No no, I'm ok with flat-chested girls but not my friends. D8 they always demand bigger size.

Lol, how about Hiromu Arakawa(FMA) or Watabe Yellow(Kekkaishi)?

LOL WHEN YOU HANG AROUND MEN THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS HAHAHHAHAHAA XD;;;

OH YEAH HOR HOW COULD I FORGET HIROMU ARAKAWA DDDDD8 I think its because she always draws herself as a cow thus I tend to overlook her gender >_o;

I tend to find it easier to portray male adults in fics most of the time? Maybe cuz roleplay/cosplay and all that =\ Don't think I could portray female/male teens without making them sound absolutely whiny and make people want to slam them into a wall, lol.

And I have no idea how females think. OTL OTL OTL.

Well technically most male and female teens are whiny. Its the age of prescribed whininess haha XD

8D; well technically you're female too so it should be the same 8D;

It's actually a tough question . *__*

cause to potrey a character well comes with a good plot/storyline . It really depends how u wanna develop the character of the certain story u wanna put it . example like an average moron female/male character becomes like the most charming / valuble / character .

personally , i'll prefer both . Cause i pretty much understand how a man thinks from their perspective , also i kinda find it rather interesting to think from the female perspective as well . More better word to put , it's challenging to know how both sides are thinking . It's just my preference on this ^^; .
