Movie review: Food, Inc.

I'm a sucker for documentaries about the food we eat and where it comes from.  I loved Fast Food Nation and Super Size Me.
This one lived up to my expectations.

And inspired me to start on #13 immediately.

However, I will slightly edit it, I will eat meat that has been killed/processed by someone that I know.  (for example, the salmon my parents ( Read more... )

That's why I buy meats from organic farms and eat at Chipotle. As a consumer, I vote with my money.

I've been an organic/free range egg eater for years, and I try to do organic meat, but free range meat is just too damned expensive.
So I'm going to have to cut it out all together. :(

We really try to only eat happy meat as well. It is really a strange conversion to make- to see meat as a luxury and decide to treat it as such. You really will enjoy it more, and you'll feel better about it, and you feel better physically when you're eating happy animals.

I am guessing, though, that the wild game/fish influx may not keep you going forever, and you may have to eventually go buy meat at a store. (IE mean bacon cravings) Any reputable farmer should be willing to open up their operation and let you visit. I recommend field trips to some come springish. They won't be personal friends, but you'll get to observe how things work firsthand and feel better about the whole process. ALSO- do you buy your free range meat at farmers' markets? Sometimes you can network with producers there and make some really good bulk buys.

Small meat lockers and butcher shops are a pretty good bet - the one I go to here, the meat is farmed locally and the meat is processed on site (maybe we only have these in smaller towns). Sure, its probably not as perfect as something labled organic, free range - but there's also something to be said for supporting local farmers and meat processors. I think of it as better than a happy medium and WAY better than breaking down and buying it from the grocery store. They also have the best bacon.
