[NFB] A Log Driver’s Waltz Pleases 98% of Canadian Girls Completely--

Aug 28, 2012 23:08

As a result of the intersection between this tweet and a conversation with slashpile earlier today, I found myself awash in old National Film Board of Canada (NFB) videos this afternoon, which means that you, you lucky people, get a hefty helping of Canadiana. ^_ ( Read more... )

Absolooootely delicious! Those logrollers...woweee and oh The cat came back, and the BLACKFLIES Oh God, they have them in Scotland too, eat you alive. they DOOO!! Don't EVER watch the Falls of Shin and the salmon leaping wearing anything less than full Eskimo gear!

And the story of the sweater... oh - fanboy!!!

A delightful selection. MOST enjoyable. The only time I was in Ontario was Toronto and up at Lake Barrie and I was there WHEN THE ICE WENT OUT!!! Oh fantastic. and we played Sibelius Full Chat and watched and listened. and.... oh glory.

And they are making some super films these days. Good Old Canada!!!!

Went to Mont Real, (Montreal) and touristed, but didn't stay, though I would have loved to. Grand country, awful BIG!!!! Uncle was in Vancouver.

The NFB has some really great films, that's for sure. ^_^ Ugh, blackflies are terrible, aren't they?

Heh. The Hockey Sweater is a real classic. And Maurice "The Rocket" Richard is a big deal to a lot of hockey fans. *G*

I'm glad you enjoyed them! It sounds like you had a lovely time in Ontario and Quebec as well!

Well, we are the second largest country in the world. ^_~ Vancouver would have been quite the jaunt if you were only in Eastern Canada!

I'd have loved to go by train right across, but Uncle Pip was long dead. This was in l976 and I was visiting/caring for a friend who had bad breast cancer and was on Chemo... bad for her, but SHE SURVIVED for YEARS!!! hooray, Darling Edwina. But she was carrying on working part-time at the University, so I had time to 'explore' as well.
Twas grand. I was entranced by the modern highrises ... glorious!!! and living like a prairie dog underground, and popping up every so often... teehee. Had a ball really, other than poor Weena.

Two stupid questions from an American about Canada:

What exactly is Canada Day?

and

Why do you guys have Thanksgiving? No offense, I just DO NOT know the history behind it. Ours was the first thanksgiving with the Native Americans and all that blah blah. Did it just travel up there?

What exactly is Canada Day?Like a lot of countries, Canada has a day to mark its official formation. (Just like Independence Day for you guys.) Canada Day is July 1st, and marks the same day in 1867 when the British North American Act was enacted. This act basically joined three colonies -- Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec (previously known as Upper and Lower Canada, and then the Province of Canada) -- into Canada itself. This is the day we stopped being merely a British colony and became a country ( ... )

Wow, thank you for this! Very cool. Everything I've Always Wanted to Know About Canada but Neglected to Ask. ;)

I really like the idea of "reaffirming citizenship," though, because I feel like Americans take it for granted a lot.

And yes, I DID get your PM, but I'm hopelessly behind on LJ. Will reply soon!

<3! I've actually never seen the Blackfly one, but omg, now I'm scared to go up to North On-tear-rye-o-i-o (as I might need to for work) *shudders*.

Awww! I'm sorry! *hugs* If it helps any, it's only certain times of year that they're bad, and there are a lot of bug sprays on the market to help keep them off you. <3
