Hip Hippo Hooray!

Mar 11, 2006 16:47

You know, penguins are cute and all, but they're not cute and dangerous (unless you give them guns*). Not that I'm saying I'm not interested in conserving them and protecting the Antarctic, because I am. However, I know they're a bit of a fad right now, but there's something to be said for the cute and dangerous among us. *G* In that vein...

My hippopotamus army grows. ^_~

Telus is raising money for the hippos at the Calgary and Vancouver zoos (Foggy and Sparky in Calgary, and Hazina in Vancouver), which is great. *G* Kudos to them for cashing in on the popularity of their holiday ad campaign in a not-entirely heartless and money-grubbing way. (Hazina starred in the campaign; you can see her in the ad at the bottom of the page here.)

And hey, not only does it support the hippos and the zoos (both of which are very involved in breeding programs and conservation efforts), but I get a squishy, fuzzy hippo in the process.

Now if it only didn't take 4-8 weeks to get here. *G*

*Futurama, "The Birdbot of Ice-Catraz." The penguin population on Pluto explodes after a dark matter spill, and the "environmentalists" (I use the term loosely), combat the explosion by declaring penguin hunting season open--

Free Waterfall Sr.: Look, nobody enjoys shooting penguins. But if you have to shoot penguins, well, you might as well enjoy it.

Leela: I'm sorry, but if it's fun in any way it's not environmentalism.

Waterfall Sr.: Oh, really? How 'bout blowing up dams?

Leela: Yeah... That is fun.

Waterfall Sr.: [cocking his gun] Let's conservate!

[...]

Leela: Alright, this is for their own good. Don't leave orphans. Gotta kill entire families... But they're so cute. ...No! You can do this. It's just like murdering a little butler.

--The penguins revolt (under Bender's influence), and by the end of the episode the environmentalists leave and the penguins, finally alone, pick up the abandoned guns, point them at each other and cock 'em. Moral of the story? ...Er, penguins can operate weaponry, so don't trust them?
