I was originally annoyed about Sam's Halloween dislike explanation, but then it was pointed out to me that in the pilot Sam is bitching about not liking Halloween so I guess his story is true...though maybe he hates it even more now because of what happened in the pilot? But he doesn't want to bring Dean down from his happy ( ... )

Well, yeah, that was my point. We've known about Sam's hatred of Halloween since the first episode. It demands a better storyline than "I got nervous and vomited."

I was more annoyed about Sam not having one more sentence to explain why he totally understands the aftermath of angel possession--just a little line about 'I get hating what your body did while being possessed'--COME ON, WRITERS! (Are they afraid that a reference to something from five years ago would totally confuse the fans??? Really???)

Well, they did have to explain salt circles to us in the THEN...

The red helmeted statue is Red Hood and Jensen did voice that character in an animation several years ago. (And I hope you saw Jensen's Halloween instagram pictures of him modeling the outfit! If you didn't, and can't find them, inform me immediately and I will be sure to supply ( ... )

Okay, I have some thoughts. But first, about your confusion with Hatchet Man and All Saints' Day, it's kinda like the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, which people will sometimes refer to as the Freddie Krueger movies. I mean, I'm sure you weren't confused about that anymore, but it's what came to mind while I was reading your recap, so I wanted to say it ( ... )

Dean's comment about how he enjoyed watching these kind of movies as a kid because he liked knowing the bad guys were going to lose also makes me wonder if he fixated on this franchise in particular *because* the protagonist burned to death on All Saints' Day just like Mary did. (Or wait, did the guy in the movies die on Halloween instead? And if he did then why is the franchise called ASD? Now I'm confused.)

Yeager died on Halloween, killed by a Halloween prank gone wrong. He came back the next day, All Saints' Day. Mary died the day after that, November 2.

And I commented further on your LJ, but I really like your theory about the two sides of Dean!

1. Your Matt Foley reference had me laughing--it's so true!

2. Sam talking to himself when he got startled by Panthro also made my heart burst with joy for no reason.

3. Canonically Sam didn't know what date Mary died, so I always figured that John and Dean got depressed and angry and drunk around Halloween each year and Sam knew the gist but not the details, so that just made him lowkey upset every year. I can wrap this episode's story into that by thinking of poor, wee!Sammy trying to get away from his miserable family and actually have fun for once on Halloween and then that happens. This is how I make my headcanon work.

I like your headcanon. I do think it's possible (probable) that Sam knew what day she died, but never put 2 + 2 together and realized it was his six-month birthday, so that's why he was surprised when that was pointed out.

This was an entertaining ep, on the whole, except

a/ that it insisted on comparing itself to the sooooooooooo much better Hollywood Babylon. The "ASD: The Reckoning" trailer was just a straight up copy of the "Hellhazers II: The Reckoning" trailer, minus all the things that made the original clever, witty, funny . . . and original.

and

b/ the thing : /

I actually liked the references to Hellhazers and Route 666. I thought it was clever.

I liked the little shout outs to Hellhazers and 666 at the beginning, but then we got to the ASD movie trailer and I was just . . .

Re-watch the Hellhazers II trailer in Hollywood Babylon and, if you haven't before, freeze on the certification and credits frames, and read them carefully. I'm afraid the ASD trailer was just really lame by comparison.

Hollywood Babylon was just such a brilliant satire on the industry, on the genre, and on the show itself. It was clever on so many levels. Mint Condition . . . wasn't really. It was entertaining on one level, but mostly it was just Davy Perez fangirling on the work of a better writer.

Don't get me wrong. There's a lot of things I like about Davy Perez, and the fact that he's a fan of Ben Edlund is one of them. We all admire and miss Ben. But show squeeing about its own former greatness is just kinda sad, really :(

I guess last week’s episode was so full of that, it made me build up a tolerance!

Awwwww, loved the episode to bits! The meta (oh the glorious gift of happening into Jensen's red hood photoshoot this morning) the boy!bonding, even the ridiculous nerdy clothes (I bet they we're a reference to something). And the Doppelgänger-ing not only of the characters but also the cinematography of the show (that shot of Dirk running past the windows behind the guards... Pure gold ( ... )

also did no one else see the absolute buffet Dean was draped on that bed of his, ass up, forearms on display, looking up at Sam through the lashes? I was surprised he didn't jump him right there and then...

Oh yes, Dean was spead out like a feast, all ready for Sam!!
