As to Sam's prosaic reason for not liking Halloween, I can hand wave that it isn't the real reason. I think it is that Halloween was a terrible time of year for him, but right now, he's trying to make sure Dean won't go back to moping in his room. Saying Dad would get drunk around that time of year (although I do think that is fanon not canon) and Dean and Dad were always sad would just throw Dean back into angsting. But coming up with an cute "laugh at Sam" memory lets Dean still feel good. So the "laugh at Sam" memory it is.
hey, am a lurker who is a fan of your fic and commentaries :) wrote a blog post about this episode's fixation with Sam's aversion to Halloween here: https://quiescent9.livejournal.com/90733.html
14.04 was the perfect post-Halloween treat -- perfect old-school Supernatural all the way! A legitimate MOTW, road trips, brotherly moments, single-layer Winchesters (and Dean's stocking feet), delightful meta (I also spied clips from "Route 666" and "Southern Comfort"), humor, and Sam and Dean "saving people, hunting things" -- it all makes me a VERY happy fangirl.
I was also disappointed by the reveal of Sam's Halloween issues. After young Sam undoubtedly spent years witnessing his Dad and brother's gloomy moods around the holiday, are we now supposed to believe that a sixth-grade embarrassment left him with a lifelong hatred of Halloween? Eh.
On the other hand, I totally understood Dean's retreat to his room -- the Bunker is waaaay overpopulated these days. Give the man some PEACE.
I was so relived to see a MOTW episode, and I think this was a strong one. There were lots of Easter eggs, and brotherly banter, and other than the thing we not mentioning I enjoyed it.
(I'm more than happy to accept the idea that Sam is just trying to cheer Dean up here, and not bring him down. So he tells a self-deprecating story that he knows Dean will enjoy teasing him about.)
