I've been thinking about this scene (because no, I'm not over this episode yet, in case you were wondering), and it turns out I got the dialog wrong...
I don't think they talked about anything on the way to Dayton. I don't think Dean attempted to communicate at all--or responded to others' attempts. Just one foot in front of the other to get to Mary and Jack, the others could keep up or not. I'm convinced that when he got Cas, Gabriel, and the civilian to the camp, he intended to turn right around and go after Sam alone
( ... )
I'm still not over 13X21 either. I'm with Dean in wanting to go back and get Sam and not leave him in a goddamn vampire den. I can't believe the other's forced Dean to do that!!! That was just wrong to do!!!
"If I had known, I wouldn't have come. If I had known I'd lose him, I would have chosen not to save you. He loved you both so much, but I would have left you here forever if I'd known." - yeah, it was a kick in the teeth for Dean that Mary and Jack were okay, and there hadn't been a need to hurry to get to them. This is definitely how he felt *sobs*
