This movie was based on a novel, but the story was altered to capitalize on The Mummy and The Old Dark House, which makes for kind of a strange mash-up. The Mummy...well, it's impossible for me to have one favorite Universal monster movie, but The Mummy has my favorite sequels, so if no one mentions Spanish Dracula and there are no Frankenstein ( Read more... )

I liked this, I'll say that right now. I liked the way it looked, stark and bleak and empty. I liked that the soundtrack was unobtrusive. I liked that it didn't lead us by the hand, and tell us what to think and feel about every little thing. I've seen a lot of "is this normal child/teen behavior, or is my kid possessed?" movies, but this is the first one I've seen that explicitly played on the fear that boys are monsters who will steal your teenage daughter and dramatically alter her personality to turn her against you because they want to have sex with her.
