Jean wasn't at the school. She was miles away, in the City, but no less worried for him. Opening her mind, she reached out, sending a long tendril of thought across the mental landscape till she found him in the infirmary. She winced. His mind felt like broken mirrors inside, sharp and distorted and full of dangerous pieces. No wonder, after what Apocalypse's modifications and the Joker's poisons had done to it.

*Warren,* she sent telepathically, projecting her concern through the psychic connection she had established.

Even after all the years that had gone by, Warren was able to pick out that voice in his head any time, any day, in just a fraction of a second.

*Jean!?* he sat up quickly, despite the massive injuries marking his body. She was someone he cared about very much; a teammate, a best friend, and the first girl he ever loved. She meant so much to him, and to hear her in his head at one of the worst moments was a relief like no other. *Where are you?*

*I'm in the City. Relax, Warren, don't overexert yourself.* She hoped he listened.

Jean hesitated for a few moments, the urge to ask him how he was feeling warring with the idea that it would somehow be insensitive to do so. She and Warren went way back, to the early days of the team, and he was one of the best people she knew. The worst things always happen to the best people, she thought, with a hint of irony.

In the end she merely sent, *Will you be all right?*

He blinked as he went over the words and did his best to actually listen to them. When he realized that she wasn't anywhere physically near him, Warren laid back down and tried to get comfortable again. It was hard though when his brain was racing for an answer.

What would he say to her?

*I don't know, Jeannie. I don't even know what's going to happen. I just helped Hodge's campaign. I...I don't know.*

He was freaked out. She would be able to feel that in his thoughts, and Warren knew it too.

Dani eyed Warren through the window. Seeing him like this..This wasn't the friend that she admired, that she respected. She'd tended to him since Scott brought him back to the mansion.

But she still didn't know what to say to him.

The Warren that she saw..wasn't even capable of that on his worst days. He needed to be in company of people who loved him, not in some jail cell. She re-entered the room but kept her distance by staying at the door.

"Well, that was something.." She said, searching for the right words.

A name lingered in the back of her mind. Joker...

Warren turned to look at Dani, surprised and a little startled that she'd finally spoken to him. Most of the time he'd been awake he'd seen her lingering around, but words were never passed between them. Warren had felt too awkward to say the first words to anyone so far. This was no exception.

"Were you there?"

He couldn't remember all of the faces, but he felt considerably worse whenever he found that someone was there.

Dani sighed. He was still fuzzy, it seemed. She, on the other hand, was pissed.

"No. I got briefings from the others. And then I saw some of the footage. Not your best moment."

He swallowed, noting the tone and the choice of words. It was always hard to tell what someone like Dani Moonstar was thinking when she spoke; she could be fierce when she wanted to be. Warren knew there was no getting out of it though, and he intended to sit and listen to what she had to say.

"I'm definitely not disagreeing with you," he flicked his gaze up to hers. "What were you all briefed on, exactly?"
