She hadn't known Sam very long. She'd been here less than a week already though he'd become a fast friend, no pun intended. He was an amiable, friendly, good sort of guy-- though she knew he had to be hurting. Mariko knew a thing or two about losing a lover thanks to the whims of alternate worlds.

Since there was nothing to be done about bringing his girlfriend back, not within her power anyway, he needed what she'd needed. Friends to cheer him up.

And that's exactly what she intended to do.

It was with a smile and a wave that she greeted Sam as she landed, having spotted him from above. She hadn't been in New York City long enough in her time to know the way all the streets had worked, not that they'd even necessarily be the same here, so flying had seemed far more practical. Good thing Sam's bright blonde hair stuck out from above.

"Hey! Ready to have your ass handed to you by a girl half your size?" She greeted with a good natured wink.

That girl was light on a dark day already, Sam could tell. She was just the kind of person he needed to cheer him up, even if it wasn't something that would last that long. He still missed Tabitha, and he would continue on missing her for awhile.

Right now, however, he had a race to get into.

Sam watched her land, grinning when she spoke. "Ah don't count on losin' this one." He told her cheerfully. "Ah'm pretty good with my speed, Ah'll have you know."

"So'm I," She replied just as cheekily, placing her hands confidently on her hips. "I flew all the way to New York from Japan, you know. In the snow. Uphill, both ways!"

It almost reminded her of the time she'd spend with Morph, back with the Exiles. Someone to joke around a bit with, someone she could play off of without having to worry about delicate sensibilities or easily upset trauma. Not to say neither of them was without trauma-- they certainly were. They just both tended to use humor to release tension. It helped keep her sane more times than she could count.

"What do you say we make it more interesting. A bet, maybe? Loser buys lunch?"

That could prove to be troublesome on Sam's part, but it wasn't like he was in this just to beat her. Still, he played along. Winning couldn't hurt. "Didja really?"

Now that sounded like a nice deal; either way, Sam wouldn't mind it. Heck, if she got his mind off stuff for at least a couple hours, he'd owe her one no matter who'd be titled winner. "That sounds like a plan."
