oh hi there! loveyourenemy May 20 2011, 14:01:20 UTC
Matsuka had been very busy since most of the residents of his floor had turned into children; it hadn't left him much time to himself. But dogs still needed walked, so after making sure that someone was keeping the others out of trouble, he clipped the leash onto Mouse's collar and took his puppy out to the park.

Mouse was proving increasingly misnamed - it was lucky for Matsuka that he had a gentle disposition, because in the two months since he'd adopted him Mouse had already put on a noticeable amount of growth.

"...pretty soon I think you're going to be taking me for walks instead," Matsuka commented ruefully.

Hopefully 'pretty soon' did not include the next thirty seconds, because zooming around a bend in the path ahead of them was something slightly noisy and possibly mildly alarming: a gleeful young kid zooming toward them on an electric skateboard.

And he was just a little too engrossed to think through what would happen if he buzzed a small dog on this thing. Sorry, Matsuka.

"--ah!" Only Matsuka's empathy gave him any real warning that someone was about to come zipping around the bend; if it hadn't been for that, he would not have had the chance to yelp and snatch up his dog before Johnny zoomed right over him. As it was, it nearly resulted in a collision, and it was just as well that Matsuka hadn't reflexively thrown up a psion shield.

And Johnny, of course, had no warning at all, so at unexpected sight of some guy and a dog suddenly showing up around the corner he yelped even louder. "Wh--wWHOOAA!!"

He automatically turned sharply to try to avoid the dog even though the guy was already snatching him up, but all he managed to to was completely lose his balance. He skidded a couple feet to the side while flailing his arms wildly and then fell forward and face-planted right into the grass.

"WWAAAAAUGH--OOoomphpffhthft--"

Matsuka was left clutching his puppy and watching in horror as Johnny wiped out. "I'm sorry!" As Johnny's skid came to its ignominous end, Matsuka rushed anxiously toward him. "Are you all right? I'm really sorry!"

Setting Mouse back down on the grass, he knelt to help Johnny up - and blinked in sudden recognition. "--ah, Bruno?" Hello, sudden vague awkwardness.

Luckily Johnny was thoroughly helmeted and padded (you can thank his mom for that ingrained habit), so all he had when he rolled over to look back up at Matsuka was some dirt and grass stains and a very apologetic look.

"I'm sorry!! Is your dog okay?" he asked rapidly while he un-clipped himself from his board. He let himself be helped up and immediately looked over at the dog, but then Matsuka spoke again and Johnny stared at him blankly.

"Wha? ... Oh, uh..." Johnny bit his lip and rubbed the back of his neck with one hand. Even more vague awkwardness! "I... guess?"

An awkward little laugh hitched out of Matsuka, and he rocked back a little; the surprise at seeing Bruno as a child and at being able to read anything off of him was quickly being overtaken by the realization of what else his being regressed like this probably meant, if Matsuka's neighbors were any indication. Realizing it helped him to rein in his embarrassment a little and offer a smile.

"He's all right," he said, reaching to give Mouse a pat, and indeed the puppy was already tail-wagging and nosing interestedly at Johnny. Hi! "I'm very sorry we were in your way. My name is Jonah Matsuka, and this is Mouse."

Seeing a grown-up laugh all unsurely like that about him was novel enough that Johnny forgot most of his awkwardness just to cock his head and give a funny look to the guy, but having a wet puppy-nose poking at his hand just plain obliterated the rest of it. Johnny immediately smiled brightly and kneeled down to pet the excited dog, Matsuka half-forgotten.

But not all forgotten, at least. "He definitely looks all right!" Johnny answered back happily. He finally glanced back up at Matsuka a few moments later while the puppy was being preoccupied by a thorough scratching behind the ears Johnny was giving him with both hands. "My name's Johnny. I guess you must know the grown-up me or something, huh?"

"Aha, yes, something like that," Matsuka agreed, a little ruefully, and he reached up to rub the back of his neck with his hand while Mouse wriggled enthusiastically under the attention. There was definitely no way Matsuka was going to try to explain to this boy just how, exactly, he knew him. "But please don't worry about it. It's all right if you don't know who I am. It's nice to meet you, Johnny."
