"I've found that making new friends helps with that," Jack said. Seras, Yusuke, the other cops, even Hiruma in a way. "Even if they can get sent home a lot." Lamont, Garrus, too many more.

"You do meet some interesting people here," Peter agreed. Like your teenage offspring from an alternate universe, not that he was going to say that out loud.

"You mentioned that you're still looking for work around here," Jack said. "You mind telling me what you do back home?" He was curious, and prank aside, making small talk with a stranger while waiting for food was comparatively relaxing for Jack.

Peter nibbled on his breadstick for a moment as he thought over how best to answer the question. The completely out of character moral lapse that had cost him his job -- maybe any job in the New York metro area -- wasn't really something he wanted to get into, especially not with a police officer.

"Well, like I mentioned, I'm in between jobs at home as well as here -- and ugh, it just sank in that even if I find a job here I'll have to start all over again as soon as I get home. But before that I was a photographer, though I took some time off to teach high school science."

That totally sounded like he was talking about a sabbatical and not a prospective career change which went to hell when he revealed his secret identity to the entire planet and put his family in so much danger that he had to alter reality to fix the situation ... right?

It definitely sounded like a sabbatical to Jack, at least. Of course, the reality-altering thing would never have occurred to him. "Maybe you could teach at the Institute then," he remarked, biting into his breadstick again. "I know they employ a lot of Imports."

Peter nods thoughtfully. "Yeah, I know their science guy, Dr. McCoy, through a friend." If your own alter ego counts as a friend, that is. "I'm pretty sure he's got all that covered, but maybe I could teach a photography elective or something, I don't know. Wouldn't be enough for a living, but it might cover some bills."
