"But you did," Fakir said, his tone warm and supportive, devoid of accusation. A strange, soft smile pulled at the corners of his mouth. "What happened with Rue isn't entirely your fault. You brought about the inevitable ahead of time, I think."

Abruptly, Fakir slipped his hand out of Mytho's grasp and wrapped his arms around the prince, pulling him close. "What Rue believes is her own business, and no fault of yours. And everyone fails eventually. Everyone makes mistakes, does things that they shouldn't. You aren't any different, and I don't think Rue realized that. I don't think you realize that."

"But you're the Prince Who Loves Everyone," Fakir said to finish what he assumed Mytho would say. He patted Mytho's back, encouraging him to calm further. "That doesn't prevent you from making mistakes. It doesn't prevent you from being unable to meet standards that are too high for anyone, even you, to match."

Good, Fakir thought as he shifted toward the wall behind the bed to allow Mytho to lean into him as much as he liked. Just like the terrible late nights after Fear had returned to Mytho's heart, he could feel the tension leave the prince's body. For a moment, he selfishly wished that this sort of thing could happen under happier circumstances.

"You are that prince," he said. "More so now than you've been as long as I've known you. But a prince can fail and still be strong and proud. A knight can be afraid and still do courageous things."

"You are not a failure," Fakir said, speaking each word clearly and precisely, as if Mytho couldn't understand them. "You have given everything to help her, done things that you would never consider to make her happy. You've sacrificed your own happiness for hers, and you knew this. She needs more than you can give. You can't fault yourself for that."

Though Fakir could not see Mytho's face, he could feel the soft tremors of his body, and was far from surprised when he felt a tiny drop of warmth soak through the fabric of his shirt. He stroked the prince's back and softly hushed him, again recalling the days after he had gone into a panic in the auditorium.

"It's all right," he said. He knew by now that there wasn't any point in telling him not to cry. "I know it hurts to feel this way. It's all right."

"You find another reason," Fakir said softly. He tried his best to ignore the twisting in his chest, focusing on Mytho's pain rather than the pain it caused in him. He pulled back slightly to glance down at Mytho's tear-streaked face and dry his cheeks with the back of his hand. "You move on, and you become stronger for having failed once and survived it. There are people here who need to be protected. There are others who love you."
