In the background there is a parade making its way down the avenue with people wearing distinctly foreign looking military uniforms and traditional looking garb. Hey, you never know. We're only a little over 42 years away from Minority Report ... not that that's such a good thing.

Short story by Philip K. Dick, then a movie by Spielburg starring Tom Cruise. Basically, in the future the police has a "PreCrime" division which arrests people for murders they haven't committed yet. Everyone is tracked by their retinal scans -- people's eyes are as unique as their fingerprints, that part's not science fiction -- so they do actually get news and advertising beamed straight to them. 'Course, that makes it a lot harder to go on the run when you're accused of murdering a stranger you've never met in 36 hours...

The film's pretty fun, actually. Worth a rent, assuming the square-jawed hero doesn't join us for the next while.

That sounds like a good read. It's been ages since I actually read a book. I'm more of a magazine gal most of the time, but I might make an exception for something exciting.

Oh, it's exciting, all right. Do they have a lot of science fiction when you're from, ma'am?

It's not really the big thing back home. The kids are more into pirates than space men.

And, please, call me Laurie.

Well, I've always been a space guy but even I have to admit that pirates have certain advantages in the make believe department, what with the eyepatches and the blood-curdling "YAAARRRGH!"-ing, so on and so forth.

The name's Peter, Peter Parker. It's nice to meet you, Laurie.

Don't forget peg-legs and parrots on your shoulder.

[She chuckles.]

It's nice to meet you too, Peter.
