Travel Sale for October? No Thanks, There's Too Many Stupid People!
Over the past week I've been getting a lot of advertisements about travel sales. Hotels are all offering bonus points for paid stays. That much is normal. What's new is that airlines are offering cut rates on flights bought with points. That's understandable, as a) the airlines' business has been way down during the Coronavirus pandemic so they're looking for customers, and b) frequent flyer miles/points on the books count as a liability. With few people flying, customers' mileage balancing are just sitting there or maybe even increasing (due to miles earned from credit card spending, say) so airlines are getting jittery.
In a world where there wasn't a global Coronavirus pandemic I'd say, "Heck yeah, let's travel!" and take advantage of these sales. But the fact is we live in a world where there is a global Coronavirus pandemic. And worse, sadly, I live in a country where the pandemic is especially bad because too many people and too many political leaders are in denial about how serious it is. Last night in a nationally televised interview former GOP Chair Michael Steele ranted, "40% of the country looks at it and goes, 'Yeah, I'm with stupid.'" I've touched on this a few times in my writings about our recent driving trip to Utah and Arizona (still more to come!) but I'll state it clearly, here and now: That trip demonstrated to me that this is not the time to travel! 😧 It's just too dangerous with too many deniers- approximately 40% of the overall population- unwilling to take simple, common-sense precautions.
There's an old saying that you can't change what other people do, you can only change your reaction to it. Well, the only sensible reaction right now given the number of militantly ignorant & dangerous idiots is to stay home.
