I wouldn't actually expect to see this as a warning - I'm aware that you can't possibly predict for every single person's triggers even if you tried - but that said, I wish there had been a warning for assholes who lie and take advantage of people with memory loss. I always forget (haha, irony, I has it) that amnesia fic and stories dealing with ( Read more... )

Sorry you've had to deal with this, love. And good for you for telling off the casting room person! You're a strong person - don't forget it. &hearts

Thank you for the love and support! I wandered upstairs and did food prep and dishes and all kinds of practical things. They were a lovely distraction.

And oh, do I wish I could remember telling him off! I'll take the story, though.

*holds holds holds* I'm sorry you've had to deal with that. I can see how reading a fic like that would be massively upsetting and I hope you feel better now, bb <33333

You know, as a big fan of amnesia fic, I never thought of things like that. It's really interesting to get things from your perspective, and it's really great that you were willing to come out and tlk about it!

Only meeep, kind of worrying about how I'm going to portray memory loss in my big bang and whether or not people are going to find it triggery.

So here's the thing! You shouldn't worry too much about triggers, because that would be like a librarian worrying that the information in their library will be used for nefarious purposes; taken too far, the shelves would be empty and you wouldn't be able to write about anything at all. So long as you stay respectful of where we're coming from and the way you write things, I think that most of us with unusual triggers are aware that we're taking risks when we read and that we can't ask you to be mind-readers.

Also, when I have the energy to cope with it, I feel like it's a part of my responsibility as a survivor, as someone who's had absolutely incredible community support over the years, to talk about everything I've been through. Signal boost and all that :)

I'm sorry you're dealing with that. Amnesia and the intersection between memory and identity are such common themes in sci fi and genre tv/film/literature - it has to be frustrating to see elements of your personal experience manipulated and/or misrepresented to advance a plot. And yeah, I can see how other characters lying to and taking advantage of characters with memory loss would be infuriating.

Kudos for talking about it. I do hope you're feeling better. The more I get to know you, the better I understand where your interest in strong, badass women in television comes from. You're clearly pretty strong and badass yourself.

Thank you for saying such kind things! I'm flattered and a little bit flustered, but delighted down to my toes :) And I'm way better today!

You know, it's easier to see those themes on television and in film, probably because there's a level of distance that you gain when you lose inner monologue. Sometimes it's still really frustratingly, badly done (see: all of my rants about Glee and disability), but fanfic is way more likely to trigger me than "official" material. Even when that published material is books, I think I have a more immediate reaction to fanworks because it's so much more highly interactive; in theory, I could actually approach the creator and open a dialogue. I just can't do that with mainstream publications!

*peeks head out from around upsetness* Are they made with almond flour?

Owls :D Even without the captions, I could stare at those beautiful, beautiful creatures for quite a while.
