Recently it's been my impression that the level of discourse in this group has deteriorated badly in terms of i) the presence of personal attacks and generally hateful comments and (ii) the quality of arguments

You cannot have a civilised debate when the topics at hand consist of, say, "I believe that black people want to kill me and my girlfriend, therefore I should have a gun".
Unless you propose to actively start limiting membership based on some arbitrary criteria, there is no way to keep such topics out, and once those topics are out of the bag, good luck stopping the train.
Interestingly, canpolitik started out as a moderated community for that very reason. I opened it up in mid-2004 to promote dialogue. So far the place is fairly self-reliant- the snark factor is high enough to shut up outright idiots.
I agree with a number of the points made in the original post I just wanted to address a few of the issues which have been presented within this thread

It might be easy to dismiss, but a lot of voters have the same view as me. Regardless of political views, voters are won and lost on how "intellecutal" they are thought of. Its a HUGE factor. Voters feel they have something in common that someone isn't perfect, has flaws and even made serious mistakes before

its why a lot of people don't vote too. if you had more down to earth politicians who were even low-brow like them, many more would be involved and interested in politics.
