Wo Ist Die Toilette?

Hey, me again. Quick question for you all. In the common rooms, there are bathroom, right? I'm trying to remember whether or not that was fanon or canon. And, with Gryffindor, where were they located (granted they actually exist). Off the common room or what? Thanks!

Oh, and I can't really speak German all that well. This was something I remembered ( Read more... )

Ah, the bathroom question. The only ones ever recorded have been public loos around the corridors and schools, which students go to between classes, and the Prefect's bathroom. No bathrooms mentioned in the common rooms or dorms, to I imagine it's safe to assume they exist, lmao.

I always got the impression that each dorm (like the room where all the students of a certain year and sex, i.e. Harry always sharing a room with Ron, Neville, Seamus, and Dean) had its own bathroom. One on every floor, so to speak. (I wish we knew if the students advanced a floor as they advanced years.) I don't remember anything indicating they went straight from the common room into a bathroom.

Chamber of Secrets, chapter five: "They hurried up (the staircase), right to the top, and at last reached the door of their old dormitory, which now had a sign on it saying SECOND YEARS."

There's no mention of bathrooms in the original description of the Gryffindor tower (PS/SS Ch. 7: "They...found themselves in the Gryffindor common room, a cosy, round room full of squashy armchairs. Percy directed the girls through one door to their dormitory and the boys through another. At the top of the spiral staircase...they found their beds.")

If there is a bathroom/toilets the usual arrangement would be to have them off the dormitory. (I think there's a mention somewhere of someone (Neville?) coming back to the dorm from the bathroom in the middle of the night.)

Moaning Myrtle "Haunts the girls' toilet on the first floor," - which Hermione avoids (CoS Ch. 8), so presumably she either uses the ones in Gryffindor Tower, or on a different floor of the school.

Not only would they have to have toilets, but showers, too. They always get up and dressed and ready for classes in their dorms. Maybe there's one common shower for all the boys, and the same for the girls? But having a toilet near their beds would be a good thing -- I don't know about anyone else, but I have to go once or twice a night!

But nothing in canon, no. I guess peeing and taking showers is too mundane to mention, lol.

of course, Hogwarts is a 9th century castle, so there may be the usual garderobe direct from each dorm into the moat, (and tin baths filled by the house elves.)

(Now I'm worried about the sanitory arrangements for the Slytherin dungeons - which may explain rather too much about Snape's greasy hair...)
