Talkin' 'bout the Weather

Uh, hey again. Another couple questions for you all, dealing with the weather.

What is the weather like at Hogwarts around Halloween and Christmas time? How cold is it? Is there snow? I mean, I know it snows in the films, but I've always heard that weather in Britain is very wet, not exactly snowy.

For reference, I where live 'cold' is, like, ( Read more... )

It's the general consenses, if not actual canon, that Hogwarts is in Scotland. If so, then the weather there, north of England, would be worse in the winter.

There are a few places in the books when it's mentioned that the weather was so bad that the students couldn't go outside for breaks, or that it was so cold in the castle that the students were wearing extra layers under their robes. So yes, I think it's very wintery at Christmas.

I was going to say something else, but I can't think of it now. If I remember, I'll edit or post again.

I remember what I was going to say -- I thought it was strange that they would have an underwater task in the Tri-Wizard Tournement in February!

And they play Quittich during the winter, too.

British school sports are usually split into winter and summer. Winter sports you'd play September to April (football, rugby, cross-country, netball, hockey) and summer April to June/July (cricket, athletics, tennis, rounders). Quidditch is very much in the football mould. (Actually, football would continue into the summer at schools - maybe not in PE lessons, but the football team would still be playing. Netball might continue for the girls.)

i live in Northumberland so not quite Scotland, but only arond 30 miles away from the border.
this year it was cold (probably 5-10 degrees centigrade) but dry.
last week we had snow - this is not particularly the norm - and usually only happens on high ground.
Right now the temperature is 1 degree centigrade and i've been having to scrape ice off my car in the morning.
we haven't had a white christmas for years and usually it's colder in january and february than it is now.

saying that i don't think JK would let fact get in the way of snow at christmas, maybe the magic helps!

That's a good point, but if they could control the weather, it seems they'd keep it from raining during Quidditch matches!

Remember around Halloween in the third book, Harry had his fateful Quidditch match in a terrible, terrible storm, and the dementors showed up. I seem to recall mention of LOADS of snow arriving at the onset of winter, before the Christmas break.

And yes, Hogwarts is v. far north, in Scotland.
