A contradiction?

In GOF, Ron was the one kidnapped by the mermaids because he was the thing Harry would miss most.

I was reading Order of the Phoenix today, and noticed this for the first time.

Voldemort showed Harry that Sirius had been taken because, through Kreacher, he had learned that Sirius was the one whom Harry would go to any length to saveTheories ( Read more... )

Well, Voldemort knows where Sirius is, and the relationship between him and Harry, thanks to Kreacher and Narcissa. TPTB for the Triwizard Tournament do not. Except Dumbledore, and he isn't telling.

But through his link with Harry, he must have realized that Ron was his best friend.

Maybe Hogwarts' magic was keeping him away from Ron.

He wouldn't have needed Ron, he didn't need Sirius.

I don't know if he would realize that Ron was Harry's best friend through their mental connection. Voldemort seems to have trouble with related concepts.

Well, sure. Harry might have loved Sirius more than Ron. But Dumbledore couldn't have very well asked Sirius to come out of hiding to motivate Harry, while Ron would work just as well, could he?

No, that might have raised a few eyebrows when Sirius thrust his head above the water, lol.

Agree with gryffindor_phan on above comment, and feel the need to point out that those two events were a year apart. Harry turned into quite something of a little teenage whiny bastard over the summer, and had all these flashes of wanting to do things that would hurt Hermione's and Ron's feelings, like not telling them about anything that the members of the Order told him...and like the fact that he would rather Hermione and Ron left him alone just after they greeted him when he walked into No. 12 Grimmauld Place. Also, Sirius got closer to Harry as Harry knew him longer and actually lived with him for some time than he was in Harry's fourth year--and, besides, Albus Dumbledore would not expose Sirius to the wrath of the wizarding world, most of whom were convinced that he was a filthy murderer, just for the Triwizard Tournament. Even if Sirius was closer to Harry then, Dumbledore wouldn't have sent him into the lake for the simple reason that Sirius would be sent back to Azkaban after Harry pulled him to the surface ( ... )

1) The panel of judges didn't know about Sirius Black, because they were probably assuming that Sirius was still a killer and that Harry most likely hated Sirius' guts for betraying his parents and even if they had known, hard to get a supposedly killer out of hiding.

2) Voldermort didn't want to deal with trying to break through the barriers of Hogwarts, where the most powerful magic protects it, even without Dumbledore there just to go "Hi, Harry, I'm stealing your best friend now! Come and get me! Oh by the way, have a pastry, they're lovely." Much easier to taunt Harry with Sirius' image without risking exposure to the magical community...which is what happened that night anyways, so he failed miserably.
